{"id":71867,"date":"2018-11-20T03:08:03","date_gmt":"2018-11-20T01:08:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=71867"},"modified":"2018-11-20T03:08:03","modified_gmt":"2018-11-20T01:08:03","slug":"cashgate-suspect-dies-in-car-crash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/11\/20\/cashgate-suspect-dies-in-car-crash\/","title":{"rendered":"Cashgate suspect dies in car crash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Rebecca Chimjeka: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/supreme-court-acquits-cashgate-convict-maxwell-namata\/\">Cashgate<\/a> suspect Maxwell Namata died in a car accident that occurred near Mkwichi Secondary School in Area 47, Lilongwe Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Cashgate is a term coined to describe massive plunder of public resources.<\/p>\n<p>Lingadzi Police spokesperson, Gift Chitowe, said the accident occurred after Namata lost control of a vehicle he was driving, Toyota Fortuner registration number BLK 7373.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cHe, at about 05:00 hours, was travelling from Bwandiro location heading to Area 47 and, upon arrival at Mkwichi Community Day Secondary school, lost control of the vehicle due to speeding; hence, swerved off the road and overturned,\u201d<\/em> Chitowe said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He said results of an assessment by hospital officials established that Namata died due to internal injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Namata was one of the suspects in a case in which former budget director for the Ministry of Finance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/court-hears-paul-mphwiyo-case-in-camera\/\">Paul Mpwhiyo<\/a> and others are answering charges of loss of the government\u2019s K2.4 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Namata was in 2015 sentenced to eight years imprisonment following his conviction on theft and money laundering.<\/p>\n<p>However, early this year the Supreme Court of Appeal, acquitted him on the basis that his conviction was based on unfounded evidence<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Rebecca Chimjeka: Cashgate suspect Maxwell Namata died in a car accident that occurred near Mkwichi Secondary School in Area 47, Lilongwe Monday morning.
