{"id":71842,"date":"2018-11-19T07:08:03","date_gmt":"2018-11-19T05:08:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=71842"},"modified":"2018-11-19T07:08:03","modified_gmt":"2018-11-19T05:08:03","slug":"tears-as-matthews-chikaondas-body-arrives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/11\/19\/tears-as-matthews-chikaondas-body-arrives\/","title":{"rendered":"Tears as Matthews Chikaonda\u2019s body arrives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Macdonald Thom: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/charles-chuka.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-71651\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/charles-chuka-300x237.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/charles-chuka-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/charles-chuka-45x35.jpg 45w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/charles-chuka.jpg 463w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>There was sadness at Kamuzu International Airport (Kia) Sunday when people welcomed the body of former minister of Finance, Mathews Chikaonda.<\/p>\n<p>After arrival, the body was taken to the deceased\u2019s home in Area 43 in Lilongwe, where a funeral ceremony was held before departure for Mtakataka in Dedza District.<\/p>\n<p>Chikaonda <a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/an-ode-for-mathews-chikaonda\/\">died<\/a> on October 30 at Loma Linda University Medical Centre in the United States (US) after a long battle with cancer.<\/p>\n<p>A representative of the family, James Chikaonda, said the former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) governor always stood for the family.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cHe always put family first. He was there for all of us,\u201d<\/em> Chikaonda said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He also expressed gratitude to all people who supported the family since the former Press Corporation chief executive officer died.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe thank you very much for your moral and financial support,\u201d<\/em> Chikaonda said<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One of the late <a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/military-honours-for-matthews-chikaonda\/\">Chikaonda\u2019s<\/a> friends, Charles Chuka, who is also former RBM governor, described him as a man who always fought for the country\u2019s economic transformation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cHe will be remembered for his 10-point plan. The late Professor Mathews Chikaonda will also be remembered for a budget statement he delivered in 2000. He had good ideas for this country although most of his ideas were not implemented,\u201d<\/em> Chuka said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Apart from Chuka, other people present at the ceremony in Area 43 were RBM governor Dalitso Kabambe, and former governors Francis Pelekamoyo and Elias Ngalande.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Jean Kalilani, former chief justice Lovemore Munlo and US Ambassador Virginia Palmer were also among those present.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/matthews-chikaonda-to-be-buried-monday\/\">Burial<\/a> is expected to take place today at Tembetembe Village, Mtakataka, in Dedza.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Macdonald Thom: There was sadness at Kamuzu International Airport (Kia) Sunday when people welcomed the body of former minister of Finance, Mathews Chikaonda.
