{"id":71611,"date":"2018-11-13T07:19:48","date_gmt":"2018-11-13T05:19:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=71611"},"modified":"2018-11-13T07:19:48","modified_gmt":"2018-11-13T05:19:48","slug":"malawi-up-3-steps-on-competitiveness-index","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/11\/13\/malawi-up-3-steps-on-competitiveness-index\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawi up 3 steps on competitiveness index"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Chimwemwe Mangazi:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Malawi has moved three steps up on the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI)\u2014the most comprehensive assessment of national competitiveness worldwide\u2014issued by the World Economic Forum.<\/p>\n<p>The country has moved from 132 out of 137 economies in 2017 to 129 out of 140 countries.<\/p>\n<p>The index assesses factors driving countries\u2019 productivity and prosperity and Malawi\u2019s ranking on the index means that globally, the country is less competitive.<\/p>\n<p>GCI scores are calculated by drawing together country level data covering 12 categories\u2014the pillars of competitiveness\u2014that, collectively make up a comprehensive picture of a country\u2019s competitiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi scored 4.9 compared to 3.1 last year. This year\u2019s score is the highest in the past seven years.<\/p>\n<p>Top five competitive countries in sub-Saharan Africa include Mauritius, South Africa, Seychelles, Botswana and Kenya.<\/p>\n<p>Top five competitive countries at global level include the United States, Singapore, Germany, Switzerland and Japan.<\/p>\n<p>The report identifies health workforce among major challenges in Malawi.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in an interview yesterday, Blantyre-based research and evaluation consultant, Collen Kaluwa, said investing in healthy staff would be ideal for businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Economics Association of Malawi Executive (Ecama) Director, Maleka Thule, said a healthy labour force would form the foundation for sustainable economic growth.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cCountries with poor health [indicators] are associated with low economic growth and are less competitive; the findings of the report are in line with Ecama observations that poor healthcare service delivery remains among challenges affected sustainable economic growth,\u201d<\/em> Thule said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Chimwemwe Mangazi: Malawi has moved three steps up on the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI)\u2014the most comprehensive assessment of national competitiveness worldwide\u2014issued by the World Economic Forum.
