PICKED\u2014 Fayulu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Top opposition leaders in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have picked legislator Martin Fayulu as their joint candidate for presidential elections due next month.<\/p>\n

The decision was taken on Sunday after days of negotiations in the Swiss city of Geneva.<\/p>\n

The meeting included two heavyweights \u2013 former vice president Jean-Pierre Bemba and ex-provincial governor Moise Katumbi \u2013 who have both been barred from standing in the long-delayed December 23 election.<\/p>\n

Fayulu, the 62-year-old leader of the Commitment for Citizenship and Development party (ECIDE), is expected to be the main challenger against Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, a hardline former interior minister backed by outgoing President Joseph Kabila.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure we will succeed in making our country democratic, free and independent,\u201d<\/em> Fayulu told reporters.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The choice of Fayulu was seen as a surprise development, with Felix Tshisekedi \u2013 son of longtime opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi \u2013 widely regarded as the frontrunner before the announcement.<\/p>\n

The elections are critical for the future of the DRC, a mineral-rich country that has never experienced a peaceful transition of power since it gained independence from Belgium in 1960.<\/p>\n

Kabila, 47, has been in power since 2001 after the assassination of his father, Laurent-Desire Kabila, the country\u2019s third president.<\/p>\n

He was elected in 2006 and secured a second term in 2011, though that vote was plagued by allegations of widespread voter fraud.<\/p>\n

Kabila\u2019s mandate expired in late 2016 but he remained in office after presidential elections were postponed twice.<\/p>\n

The country has been struggling with various internal conflicts, which forced millions of people from their homes. It has also seen violence and widespread anger over what some saw as Kabila\u2019s refusal to relinquish power after the end of his second full term two years ago.<\/p>\n

Months of speculation over Kabila\u2019s intentions, marked by protests that were repressed at the cost of dozens of lives, ended in August when he threw his weight behind Shadary, a close ally who was sanctioned by the European Union for alleged human rights violations in 2017.<\/p>\n
