{"id":71548,"date":"2018-11-12T03:22:12","date_gmt":"2018-11-12T01:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=71548"},"modified":"2018-11-12T03:22:12","modified_gmt":"2018-11-12T01:22:12","slug":"97-street-kids-rescued","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/11\/12\/97-street-kids-rescued\/","title":{"rendered":"97 street kids rescued"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Patience Lunda, Contributor:<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare and non-governmental organisations that advocate children\u2019s rights have rescued over 97<a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/street-children-still-terrorising-cities\/\"> streets kids<\/a> in three cities of the country.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry has embarked on the exercise after observing that there is an increase in the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/the-silent-terror-unleashed-by-street-kids\/\">street kids<\/a> in cities.<\/p>\n<p>Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare spokesperson, Lucy Bandazi, said 40 kids have been rescued in Lilongwe, 25 in Mzuzu and 32 in Blantyre City.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cOur assessment indicates that some parents need parental skills while others require capacity-building for them to have viable sources of income. We are helping children based on their needs since some have fled their homes because of poverty, hunger and orphanhood,\u201d<\/em> she said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She, however, said there was need to channel more resources to the cause.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe ministry has a social cash transfer programme that assists their families but it is not enough; which is why there is need for more resources to effectively remove them [street kids] and reconnect them with their families,\u201d<\/em> Bandazi said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, Foundation for Children\u2019s Rights Executive Director, Jenipher Mkandawire, has commended the ministry on the move.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThese children learn bad behaviours while roaming the streets. Some steal while others indulge in other bad behaviours,&#8221;<\/em> Mkandawire said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Research shows that more than 8,000 children live on the streets of Malawi\u2019s major cities while 80 percent of those kids are orphaned through HIV and Aids.<\/p>\n<p>The Malawi Poverty and Vulnerability Assessment shows that over 60 percent of Malawians live below the poverty line of $2 a day while 22 percent of them are extremely poor, living below 10 cents a day.
