\"\"<\/a>Former Malawi national football team striker, Lawrence \u2018Lule\u2019 Waya, has insisted that he is not a miracle man to solve the Flames\u2019 scoring woes instantly, saying he needs more time to improve the players\u2019 performance.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t expect them to bang in a lot of goals just because Lawrence is here. That is not the way the game goes. What I am saying is that, with time, we can do something and, at least, I can really help,\u201d<\/em> Waya said after Tuesday\u2019s afternoon training session at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.<\/p>\n

With the Flames scoring six goals in 19 games in all competitions since April 2017 when he was hired, Coach Ronny van Geneugden (RVG) has\u2014as he did with Bob Mpinganjira and Esau Kanyenda\u2014invited Waya to drill the strikers.<\/p>\n

The South Africa-based Waya has been invited ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Group B qualifier against Comoros Islands set for November 17.<\/p>\n

Malawi have four points from four games and badly need more points if they are to qualify for the Afcon finals scheduled for Cameroon.<\/p>\n

Waya, the Flames second all-time leading scorer (with 27 goals) behind Kinnah Phiri\u2019s 67, shared his observation on the current crop of national team players.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t lie. I need to spend a lot of time with them [strikers] if we are to get something out of this. We are talking about this week and next week, as they are playing on November 17.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have good bal l possession. We have players who are talented and can do anything [with the ball]. So, I will help them build their confidence and get the goals. We play nicely from the back, midfield and upfront but what we need are the goals,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Waya, who used to score for fun with the national team and Nyasa Big Bullets in the 1980s and 1990s, said confidence, good positioning and movement are key to scoring.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have observed that some experienced attackers are struggling [to score] due to lack of confidence. During training, they need to score, at least, 10 goals if<\/p>\n

we are to get one during an actual match,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, RVG has said he would have loved if all the players were available for training, as some are engaged in club commitments.<\/p>\n

On Waya, he said: \u201cWe must look for every detail that can help the strikers to make improvement and improvement is scoring goals.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cBefore Cameroon\u2019s games, we had Esau in our coaching panel and now we are happy that Lule is with us. I hope that with this quality input and experience, he can help the strikers to gain confidence and score goals.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
