{"id":71369,"date":"2018-11-07T09:36:44","date_gmt":"2018-11-07T07:36:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=71369"},"modified":"2018-11-07T09:36:44","modified_gmt":"2018-11-07T07:36:44","slug":"tabitha-chawinga-gives-government-food-for-thought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/11\/07\/tabitha-chawinga-gives-government-food-for-thought\/","title":{"rendered":"Tabitha Chawinga gives government food for thought"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Peter Kanjere: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Malawi\u2019s trail-blazing woman footballer Tabitha Chawinga\u2019s exploits in China should give domestic sports authorities \u2018food for thought\u2019 on whether there is enough investment in women\u2019s sports, the government has said.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development, Francis Kasaila, was responding to <em>The Daily Times <\/em>question on what he makes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/tabitha-chawinga-wins-chinese-super-cup\/\">Chawinga<\/a>\u2019s clinching of the Chinese Women\u2019s Le ague\u2019s Golden Boot Award in her debut 2018 season.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe should be proud of her. Her achievements should give us food for thought on how much we are investing in ladies sports,\u201d<\/em> Kasaila said on Monday.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He added that the performance of <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/tabitha-chawinga-pips-asisat-oshoala-182034120.html\">Chawinga<\/a> and that of Malawi netball Queens is better compared to that of males\u2019 sports teams.<\/p>\n<p>The dread-locked striker scored 17 goals for Jiangsu Suning in China before helping the club to win Chinese Women\u2019s Super Cup after beating Dalian Aerbin 3-0 on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Chawinga also netted 39 goals in 18 games for Swedish side Krokom\/ Dv\u00e4rs\u00e4tt IF in 2014, then 43 goals in 2015 before signing for Kvarnsverden in the Scandinavian country.<\/p>\n<p>She scored 15 goals for Kvarnsverden in 2016 then 26 the following year before signing for Suning last year.<\/p>\n<p>The 22-year-old was also nominated for Confederation of African Football Best Woman Footballer Award.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cI am very happy to be the top scorer in China. If you look at the number of the goals I scored while in Sweden, you might think that I struggled in China but I missed several games due to injury and there are also fewer teams in the league for China compared to Sweden,\u201d<\/em> she said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Football Association of Malawi President, Walter Nyamilandu, on Monday concurred with Kasaila that women\u2019s sports requires more funding.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThere is definitely a lot of potential of women in sports in this country, particularly football. We need to revisit our sports policy to be inclusive and encompassing to promote women to actively participate in sports and not just netball.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAs Fam, we continue to invest in women\u2019s football and Tabitha is the fruit of that investment. We are looking for support from the private sector, non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders to sponsor clubs and leagues for women\u2019s football.
