{"id":71012,"date":"2018-10-29T09:48:10","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T07:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=71012"},"modified":"2018-10-29T09:48:10","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T07:48:10","slug":"malawi-finish-fourth-in-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/10\/29\/malawi-finish-fourth-in-australia\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawi finish fourth in Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Mphatso Malidadi: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_71016\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71016\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/malawi-queens-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-71016 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/malawi-queens-1-300x228.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/malawi-queens-1-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/malawi-queens-1-45x35.jpg 45w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/malawi-queens-1.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-71016\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CONTINENTAL DUEL \u2014Queens players celebrate winning against South Africa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Malawi national netball team, the Queens, have salvaged some pride after finishing fourth out of six teams at this year\u2019s Fast5 Netball World Series in Melbourne, Australia.<\/p>\n<p>In a third-place play-off, the Queens lost 38-15 to Australia at Hisense Arena Sunday, thereby failing in their quest to reclaim the bronze medal they won in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>This is Malawi\u2019s second best finish at the tournament that started in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>However, the performance was not enough to suggest that the Queens\u2019 woes are over after losing four games and winning twice.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, the Queens lost to Australia 29-15 and Jamaica 35-30 but managed a narrow 27- 26 win over England.<\/p>\n<p>On the second and final day of the competition, Malawi beat continental rivals South Africa 33- 32 but lost to eventual champions New Zealand 36-16 before going down 38-15 to Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi\u2019s performance was disjointed at times and attackers Joyce Mvula and Jane Chimaliro were a bit nervous in the absence of injured star shooter Mwawi Kumwenda.<\/p>\n<p>Capturing rebounds was also a problem for the Queens in both attack and defence.<\/p>\n<p>The introduction of Jessie Mazengera-Sanudi and Alinafe Kamwala at times did not make any difference.<\/p>\n<p>Centre court players Thandie Galeta and Takondwa Lwazi also gave away possession as Queens recorded numerous turn overs.<\/p>\n<p>At the back, defenders Lauren Ngwira, Towera Vinkhumbo- Nyirenda and Joanna Kachilika also committed unnecessary contact fouls to grant their opponents the chance to increase the tally.<\/p>\n<p>Queens coaches Griffin Saenda Senior and his deputy Whyte Mulilima were not readily available for comment.<\/p>\n<p>However, Netball Association of Malawi General Secretary Carol Bapu, who did not travel with the team, said the result is an indication that the Queens are rediscovering their form.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe should not get too excited with finishing fourth. Of course the result is better than at last year\u2019s event when we finished last.
