Bingu National Stadium (BNS) does not have power supply after Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) disconnected power at the Lilongwe facility due to accumulated bills amounting to K16 million.<\/p>\n
The facility has, since opening in 2017, been struggling to pay electricity and water bills.<\/p>\n
In the latest incident, the facility does not have power after failing to settle electricity bills for over three months.<\/p>\n
But BNS Operations Manager, Eric Ning\u2019ang\u2019a, Wednesday downplayed the issue.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is nothing new because we have delayed to pay and Escom is free to disconnect power.<\/em><\/p>\n
\u201cWe cannot blame Escom or government. Escom is doing its job. Once we get funds, we will settle the bills and we will have power reconnected so [there is] no need to panic. After all, we have standby generators. If people have activities that require electricity, we use the generators,\u201d<\/em> Ning\u2019ang\u2019a said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
The government, through the Ministry of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development, allocates K3 million per month for operations of the facility.<\/p>\n
But since the re-opening of Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, BNS is not hosting matches thereby reducing its revenue.<\/p>\n
But Ning\u2019ang\u2019a said the facility does not only survive on revenue from football.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a national stadium which was built for other equally important activities. Our cashflow has not changed despite not hosting matches. People come here to see the stadium and they pay something, so we do not generate money from football only,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
The facility, according to Ning\u2019ang\u2019a, has in-built standby generators which require 80,000 litres per hour.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
