{"id":70633,"date":"2018-10-22T03:26:07","date_gmt":"2018-10-22T01:26:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=70633"},"modified":"2018-10-22T03:26:07","modified_gmt":"2018-10-22T01:26:07","slug":"no-award-for-malawi-movies-at-amaa-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/10\/22\/no-award-for-malawi-movies-at-amaa-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"No award for Malawi movies at Amaa 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Sam Banda Jnr: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Joyce-Chavula.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-35968\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Joyce-Chavula-300x119.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"119\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Joyce-Chavula-300x119.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Joyce-Chavula.jpg 820w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Three Malawi films namely <em>Nyasaland <\/em>by Joyce Mhango Chavula, <em>The Road to Sunrise <\/em>by Shemu Joyah and <em>My Mother\u2019s Story <\/em>by Flora Suya failed to shine at the 2018 Africa Movie Academy Awards (Amaa) held in Kigali, Rwanda, on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Despite receiving five nominations, Joyah\u2019s <em>The Road to Sunrise <\/em>which won the Best Movie\u2013Southern Africa in 2018 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.softpower.ug\/winners-of-the-2018-africa-magic-viewers-choice-awards\/\">(AMVCAs)<\/a> missed out on all the five awards.<\/p>\n<p>Chavula\u2019s <em>Nyasaland <\/em>and Suya\u2019s <em>My Mother\u2019s Story <\/em>which got a nomination each also missed out.<\/p>\n<p>According to <em>www. channelstv.com<\/em>, Nollywood once again dominated the Amaa 2018 awards in its 14th edition, scooping 14 awards.<\/p>\n<p>However, the biggest single winner of Amaa 2018 was Michael Matthew\u2019s <em>Five Fingers for Marseilles <\/em>from South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The film picked up five awards including the biggest award of the night\u2014Award for Best Film.<\/p>\n<p>The event according to <em>www.channelstv.com, <\/em>which lasted until the early hours of Sunday, was spiced up by performances from acts such as Rude Boy and Psquare.<\/p>\n<p>Joyah, who travelled to venue of the event could not be reached for his comment yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>But he said before departure that he was happy that his film got five nominations.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, his second film <em>The<\/em> <em>Last Fishing Boat <\/em>also got more nominations but managed to get one award\u2014Best Soundtrack.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/shemu-joyahs-film-triumphs-at-amvcas\/\">The Road to Sunrise<\/a>, <\/em>which has also been submitted to the 2019 Oscars, among others, missed the Award for Achievement in Cinematography, which went to <em>Five Fingers for Marseilles. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The film also missed the Award for Best Director which went to Frank Rajah Arase for the film <em>In My Country<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Joyah\u2019s film, was also nominated in the category of Award for Best Film which went to <em>Five Fingers For Marseilles<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The film also missed the Award for Achievement in Soundtrack, Award for Achievement in Make-up, Award for Achievement in Sound and Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.<\/p>\n<p>Chavula\u2019s <em>Nyasaland <\/em>failed to scoop the Ousmane Sembene Award for Best Film in an African Language, which went to <em>Five Fingers for Marseilles. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Nyasaland <\/em>also got a nomination in the 2018 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCAs) but it lost out to Joyah\u2019s <em>The Road to Sunrise<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The other films that were nominated in this category were <em>Mansoor <\/em>(Nigeria), <em>Icheke Oku <\/em>(Nigeria), <em>Agwaetiti Obiuto <\/em>(Nigeria) and <em>Tunu <\/em>(Tanzania).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was sure we would at least come out with two or three awards but it has not happened. It is not a good development but we accept it. The good thing is we had three movies from Malawi this year which was not the case in the past,\u201d Chavula said.<\/p>\n<p>The actress and filmmaker, who made history for Malawi in 2016, scooping the AMVCAs Best Movie\u2013Southern Africa, said the country is making progress in the film industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should not lose hope. As I have always said there potential and all we need is support and, as filmmakers, we should keep on working hard,\u201d Chavula said.<\/p>\n<p>The filmmaker did not travel to the venue of the awards.<\/p>\n<p>Suya\u2019s <em>My Mother\u2019s Story <\/em>missed the Best First Feature Film by a Director.
