{"id":70538,"date":"2018-10-19T09:06:46","date_gmt":"2018-10-19T07:06:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=70538"},"modified":"2018-10-19T09:06:47","modified_gmt":"2018-10-19T07:06:47","slug":"mdf-pounces-on-118-mangochi-miners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/10\/19\/mdf-pounces-on-118-mangochi-miners\/","title":{"rendered":"MDF pounces on 118 Mangochi miners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Yohane Symon: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/roderick-maida.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-38940\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/roderick-maida-300x119.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"119\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/roderick-maida-300x119.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/roderick-maida-768x304.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/roderick-maida.jpg 820w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers Thursday rounded up 118 suspected illegal miners at government-owned Namizimu Forest and other areas in Traditional Authority Makanjira, Mangochi District.<\/p>\n<p>The pouncing on the suspects, some of them are from Mozambique, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), comes barely a week after some people of Mangochi delivered a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/illegal-mining-mangochi-community-petitions-apm\/\">petition<\/a> to President Peter Mutharika, through the district commissioner\u2019s Office, asking him to evict the suspected<a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/government-to-crack-whip-on-unlicenced-miners\/\"> illegal miners<\/a> they accuse of contributing to environmental degradation and employing school-going children.<\/p>\n<p>People of Mangochi want only licensed miners to be operating so that the district should be benefitting from the mining activities.<\/p>\n<p>The suspects have since been handed over to police where they are expected to be charged with illegal settlement in a protected forest reserve and conducting illegal mining.<\/p>\n<p>The foreigners face an additional charge of illegal immigration, a crime which attracts a lengthy sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Mangochi police spokesperson, Roderick Maida, confirmed that they received the suspects after MDF soldiers patrolled the areas following a directive from Mutharika after people of Mangochi demonstrated against illegal mining activities on Wednesday last week.<\/p>\n<p>As of Thursday afternoon, Mangochi police were preparing to transfer the suspects, who include 20 women, to Zomba Maximum Prison where they will be remanded pending trial.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cEverything about the case for these suspects will be done in Zomba.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe have just processed their transfer [documents] from Mangochi to Zomba Prison,\u201d<\/em> Maida said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dickens Mahwayo, spokesperson of the concerned people who presented the petition to Mutharika last week, said they were happy that the President has acted on their concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Mahwayo said they expect the soldiers to prolong their stay in the area so as to ensure the eviction of all illegal miners.<\/p>\n<p>Mangochi District Forest Officer, Leonard Kamangadanzi, Thursday said they would visit the area next week so as to assess the extent of the damage to the forest<\/p>\n<p>Mining is not fully exploited in Malawi and contributes just one percent to the country\u2019s gross domestic product.
