{"id":70481,"date":"2018-10-18T08:40:00","date_gmt":"2018-10-18T06:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=70481"},"modified":"2018-10-18T08:43:15","modified_gmt":"2018-10-18T06:43:15","slug":"mozambique-journalists-face-death-threats-says-amnesty-international","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/10\/18\/mozambique-journalists-face-death-threats-says-amnesty-international\/","title":{"rendered":"Mozambique Journalists face death threats says Amnesty International"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>By Mabvuto Banda<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Journalists, priests and civil society leaders in neighbouring Mozambique are facing death threats and intimidation following local government elections at the weekend, Amnesty International has said<\/p>\n<p>The organization knows of at least eight individuals who have been targeted with anonymous phone calls and text messages accusing them of contributing to the defeat of the ruling Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) in Nacala-Porto and Nampula cities in the northern province of Nampula.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThis is a post-election witch-hunt targeting anyone who expresses critical views of the government and is suspected of associating with the main opposition, RENAMO, in Nampula,\u201d said Muleya Mwananyanda, Amnesty International\u2019s Deputy Regional Director for Southern Africa.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Those behind the threatening calls and text messages have told the victims to \u201cbe careful\u201d and that \u201ctheir days are numbered\u201d. They were also warned that they \u201cwould disappear without a trace\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe Mozambique authorities must launch a prompt, thorough and effective investigation into the allegations of death threats and intimidation and bring suspected perpetrators to justice.
