Former Football Association of Malawi (Fam) president, John Zingale, died Tuesday at Mlambe Hospital in Blantyre after a short illness.<\/p>\n
The former Fam boss will be remembered for his initiative to bring the Fifa Goal Project One which saw the construction of Chiwembe Technical and Development Centre in Blantyre.<\/p>\n
The late Zingale was the president of Fam between 1998- 2002.<\/p>\n
During his tenure of office, Malawi qualified for the finals of the Cosafa Castle Cup.<\/p>\n
Malawi also hosted and won the Cosafa Under -17 Championship in 2001.<\/p>\n
Fam president Walter Nyamilandu said the country had lost an icon of football development.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe will greatly be remembered for being at the helm of the Association when the Malawi national football team showed great improvements. It was under his leadership that the Flames reached the Cosafa Cup final for the first time ever. It was also during his tenure that Malawi won the Cosafa Under 17 Youth Championship,\u201d Nyamalindu said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe country has lost a true friend of football who was so passionate about the game as shown by his commitment in sponsoring football teams and competitions in the country using personal funds. He contributed a lot to the development of football nationally. This is a major blow for Malawian football.\u201d<\/p>\n
Former Fam treasurer, Hubert Mfune, said Zingale achieved a lot in his short tenure as a Fam president.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt cannot be compared to what some other leaders have achieved,\u201d Mfune said.<\/p>\n
