Malawi Congress Party strategist, Ken Zikhale Ngoma, has lashed out at Escom, the power utility company, saying that they are punishing Malawians and killing livelihoods of many people with the high tariffs they are demanding.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe all know that all this has come about because of corruption and malfeasances at Escom and now they want to pass on this to poor Malawians,\u201d Zikhale said.<\/p>\n
MCP has been warring with Escom since the utility firm procured the diesel powered generators in attempts to ease power outages that have paralysed industry and resulted into job cuts over time.<\/p>\n
Now, in the wake of this week\u2019s \u00a0decision to borrow K30 billion to pay debts and the appeal for a higher tariff by Escom\u2019s chief executive officer, Allexon Chiwaya, the MCP is stepping up its fight against the company.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey are borrowing K30 billion, which we will pay through some high tariffs again and we know that they want to suppliers who support DPP who they want to pay\u2026the same ruling party suppliers who have squeezed and killed Escom,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Escom wants to re-engage the Malawi Regulatory Authority (Mera) to reconsider its 60 percent hike spread over four years and not the 32 percent hike which the authorities approved.<\/p>\n
\u201cGovernment should step in if they really care for the people it governs\u2026how many times should we plead with them to stop bleeding the very poor that put them in power,\u201d Zikhale said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is why people should vote for MCP so that next year we start cleaning up institutions like Escom, Egenco and others who are not serving their masters, the people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
