{"id":70034,"date":"2018-10-05T16:40:50","date_gmt":"2018-10-05T14:40:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=70034"},"modified":"2018-10-05T16:40:50","modified_gmt":"2018-10-05T14:40:50","slug":"joseph-mwale-attains-fide-master-title","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/10\/05\/joseph-mwale-attains-fide-master-title\/","title":{"rendered":"Joseph Mwale attains Fide Master title"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Mphatso Malidadi:<\/p>\n<p>Malawi&#8217;s highest-rated chess player Joseph Mwale has attained a Fide Master (FM) title at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fide.com\/component\/content\/article\/1-fide-news\/11140-2018-batumi-chess-olympiad-anti-cheating-measures-and-procedures.html\">World Chess Olympiad<\/a> in Batumi, Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>The Olympiad has proved to be a great success for Malawi as Mwale\u2019s compatriots, Ellen Mpinganjira and George Mwale, also won titles.<\/p>\n<p>Mwale, formerly a Candidate Master, collected 6.5 points out of 9 games to attain the new norm.<\/p>\n<p>He becomes the second FM for Malawi after Gerald Mphungu who attained his title in 2014 in Tromso, Norway.<\/p>\n<p>Chess Association of Malawi Publicity Secretary Alfred Chimthere said the FM title is attained by winning at least 66.66 per cent of one\u2019s first nine games in any international Fide-rated tournament.<\/p>\n<p>George Mwale joins the country\u2019s list of CMs that includes Chiletso Chipanga, Petros Mfune, Chimthere, Joseph Nyambalo and Paul Khuphwathea whereas Mpinganjira becomes the second woman to win a title for Malawi after WCM Linda Jambo Chaononga.<\/p>\n<p>The other great performance for Malawi was in 2016 in Baku, Azerbaijan, where two players, Petros Mfune and Paul Khuphwathea attained the Candidate Master title.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Mphatso Malidadi: Malawi&#8217;s highest-rated chess player Joseph Mwale has attained a Fide Master (FM) title at the World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia.
