{"id":69966,"date":"2018-10-04T09:57:55","date_gmt":"2018-10-04T07:57:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=69966"},"modified":"2018-10-04T09:57:55","modified_gmt":"2018-10-04T07:57:55","slug":"china-dangles-60-billion-to-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/10\/04\/china-dangles-60-billion-to-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"China dangles $60 billion to Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Watipaso Mzungu, Contributor: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/tembenu.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-24177\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/tembenu-300x162.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/tembenu-300x162.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/tembenu-610x332.jpg 610w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/tembenu.jpg 614w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>China government has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-africa\/chinas-xi-offers-another-60-billion-to-africa-but-says-no-to-vanity-projects-idUSKCN1LJ0C4\">pledged $60 billion<\/a> towards implementation of development projects in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, Liu Hongyang, broke the news in Lilongwe on Monday night during a reception marking the 69th anniversary of the People\u2019s Republic of China.<\/p>\n<p>Hongyang said industrial promotion and development, infrastructure connectivity, trade facilitation, green development, capacity building, healthcare, people-to-people exchanges and peace and security are some of the areas which would benefit from the funding.<\/p>\n<p>He said the projects would be implemented in the next three years.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe maintain the \u2018five-no\u2019 approach of China in dealing with the relations with Africa: no interference in African countries\u2019 pursuit of development paths that fit their national conditions; no interference in African internal affairs; no imposition of our will on African countries; no attachment of political strings to assistance to African; and no seeking political gains in investment and financing cooperation with Africa,\u201d<\/em> Hongyang said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He said although most people speak positively and highly of Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, there are some critics who fault China for plundering Africa\u2019s resources, setting a debt trap for African countries and damaging the environment, economic predation, neocolonialism in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Hongyang said on the contrary, African leaders praised China\u2019s contribution towards Africa\u2019s socio-economic development.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on behalf of President Peter Mutharika, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Samuel Tembenu, said the celebrations give Malawi an opportunity to reflect on the progress that China has made in the last 69 years, particularly the economic turnaround, and learn from it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Watipaso Mzungu, Contributor: China government has pledged $60 billion towards implementation of development projects in Africa.
