{"id":69934,"date":"2018-10-03T11:45:29","date_gmt":"2018-10-03T09:45:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=69934"},"modified":"2018-10-03T11:45:29","modified_gmt":"2018-10-03T09:45:29","slug":"police-officer-implicated-in-k50-million-robbery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/10\/03\/police-officer-implicated-in-k50-million-robbery\/","title":{"rendered":"Police officer implicated in K50 million robbery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>BY JAMESON CHAULUKA:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69937\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69937\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/money-safe.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-69937\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/money-safe-300x173.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/money-safe-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/money-safe.jpg 632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69937\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">RECOVERED\u2014Panga knives on top of the safe containing part of the money<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A 33-year-old police officer, Timothy Mponya, is answering charges of robbery involving K50 million allegedly stolen from KU Distributors in Blantyre.<\/p>\n<p>State prosecutor, Christopher Katani, said Mponya is answering the charge alongside Chifundo Chisoso, Maxwell Chilambula and Chikafa Gulaye.<\/p>\n<p>Katani said the four allegedly robbed the company between September 7 and 8 2018.<\/p>\n<p>He said Chilambula works at KU Distributors as a gardener while Gulaye is the company\u2019s warehouse supervisor.<\/p>\n<p>Katani said the police recovered K29 million out of the K50 million which the four allegedly stole.<\/p>\n<p>When the matter returned to Blantyre Senior Resident Magistrate Court on Monday, the State paraded three witnesses including KU Distributors Managing Director, Kamlesh Patel, who explained how he discovered that his offices were broken into.<\/p>\n<p>State Prosecutor, a Katani, said he was satisfied with the evidence tendered in court so far, adding that the State would prove its case although a police officer is involved in the matter.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cEveryone knows that no one is above the law. The Inspector General [Rodney Jose] has been saying that he will not shield anyone involved in crime, including police officers who break the law. We will tender everything we have in court so that justice should prevail,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, the court has denied the four suspects bail on the grounds that they are flight risk.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThey all applied for bail but we objected because after commission of the offence nobody was found in their homes. The police struggled to arrest them and the court sided with us.
