{"id":69879,"date":"2018-10-02T09:48:00","date_gmt":"2018-10-02T07:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=69879"},"modified":"2018-10-02T09:48:01","modified_gmt":"2018-10-02T07:48:01","slug":"rains-displace-320-in-mzuzu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/10\/02\/rains-displace-320-in-mzuzu\/","title":{"rendered":"Rains displace 320 in Mzuzu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Mandy Pondani: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over 320 people have been rendered homeless after heavy rains destroyed their houses at Zolozolo East [Lunyangwa], Luwinga and Area 1B in Mzuzu Monday morning, Mzuzu City Council (MCC) has confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>All the 15 affected households at Lunyangwa belong to employees of Lunyangwa Agriculture Research Station.<\/p>\n<p>One of the victims, Moyenda Tembo, said they had a rude awakening at around 2:00 am when they heard sound of strong winds, later accompanied by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/floods-displace-300-households-in-karonga\/\">heavy downpours<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before they figured out what was happening, Tembo,said the roof of his house was blown off.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIt is by God\u2019s grace that we did not sustain injuries, otherwise a lot of property has been damaged. Talk of chairs, television screens, clothes and foodstuffs among others,\u201d<\/em> Tembo said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At the station, the livestock section has also been affected with roofs blown off.<\/p>\n<p>MCC Disaster Desk Officer, Precious Mandala, said they were assessing the damage.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, said the council does not have readily available relief items to bail out the affected families.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe people are destitute, lucky enough those at Lunyangwa have sought refuge at the research station, but those in Luwinga and Area1B definitely need immediate help,\u201d<\/em> Mandala said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He said they would send a report to Department of Disaster Management for further intervention.<\/p>\n<p>A similar tragedy killed six people in the city two years ago.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Mandy Pondani: Over 320 people have been rendered homeless after heavy rains destroyed their houses at Zolozolo East [Lunyangwa], Luwinga and Area 1B in Mzuzu Monday morning, Mzuzu City Council (MCC) has confirmed.
