{"id":69793,"date":"2018-09-29T06:14:55","date_gmt":"2018-09-29T04:14:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=69793"},"modified":"2018-09-29T06:14:55","modified_gmt":"2018-09-29T04:14:55","slug":"children-living-in-dangerous-environment-unicef","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/09\/29\/children-living-in-dangerous-environment-unicef\/","title":{"rendered":"Children living in dangerous environment \u2014 Unicef"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <strong>Jameson Chauluka: <\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69798\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69798\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/children-students.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-69798\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/children-students-300x134.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/children-students-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/children-students-768x342.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/children-students.jpg 820w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69798\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FACING CHALLENGES \u2014 Children in Malawi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (Unicef) representatives have pointed out that a majority of Malawian children are growing up in dangerous environment, lacking basic needs for growth and survival.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-malawi-aid-drones-idUSKBN19K1Q3\">Unicef<\/a> Chief of Communication Andrew Brown said this when he closed a four day workshop for journalists on child issues that Unicef jointly organised with the Malawi Institute of Journalism (Mij).<\/p>\n<p>Brown said most children in Malawi lack quality healthcare, education and are facing all sorts of abuses.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe know that Malawi is one of the poor countries in the world and children are facing a number of challenges to access health services\u2026most children who are supposed to be in school are not and they are being abused by some people of authority in their areas which makes it difficult for them to voice their concerns,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The workshop was meant to drill practicing journalists on child rights and best child rights reporting practices.<\/p>\n<p>Brown then urged journalists to cover issues on child rights extensively.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe journalists who are a key stakeholder must realise that reporting child rights is different from reporting matters repairing the assaults. There is need for reporters to know when to hide the identities of children for their protection,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mij Project Coordinator of Media Training on Child Rights Mercy Manja said as an institution they thought it wise to engage practicing journalists on child rights as a way of raising profile of children in the country.<\/p>\n<p>One of the participants, Carol Mwenyamba of Voice of Livingstonia Radio said the training has helped her appreciate things she took for granted when reporting on children.<\/p>\n<p>She said she has appreciated that most of the times children are reflected in a negative light during coverage, especially as victims or perpetrators of violence.<\/p>\n<p>While the workshop was taking place, Unicef was also holding a similar meeting with editors from various media houses in Mangochi district.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Jameson Chauluka: United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (Unicef) representatives have pointed out that a majority of Malawian children are growing up in dangerous environment, lacking basic needs for growth and survival.
