MUTHARIKA\u2014 Is Africa that much of a threat?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

President Peter Mutharika has challenged the United Nations (UN) to stop hypocrisy of preaching democracy when the organisation fails to adhere to what it preaches.<\/p>\n

In his speech at the on-going United Nations General Assembly (Unga) on Tuesday at the UN headquarters in New York, Mutharika<\/a> attacked the organisation for treating Africa as an inferior member.<\/p>\n

Among other things, he said Africa does not have permanent seats with veto powers in the UN Security Council, despite recommendations made in 2005.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy should we allow this organisation to be accused of hypocrisy, that we preach democracy everywhere when we are not democratic enough to accommodate almost one-third of our membership in this Assembly?<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot talk about sharing responsibility while we marginalise Africans and deny them full participation in our decisions. We cannot talk about global leadership of the United Nations when African leadership is not on the decision-making tables. In any political system, we cannot claim relevance to the people that we deny,\u201d<\/em> Mutharika said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Council\u2019s permanent members with veto power are the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Russia and France, a development the Malawi leader challenged.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy should some nations be afraid of losing power by offering decision-making space to Africa when you don\u2019t lose power by accommodating other continents? Is Africa that much of a threat? This segregation of Africans must come to an end,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Mutharika<\/a> pledged Malawi\u2019s support to the UN\u2019s initiatives of fighting global threats and challenges, including terrorism and climate change.<\/p>\n

Unga is being held under the theme \u2018Making the United Nations Relevant to All People: Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Peaceful, Equitable and Sustainable Societies\u2019.<\/p>\n

In his address, American President Donald Trump said: \u201cI honour the right of every nation in this room to pursue its own customs, beliefs and traditions. The United Nations will not tell you how to live or work or worship. We only ask that you honour our sovereignty in return.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
