{"id":69653,"date":"2018-09-25T10:42:09","date_gmt":"2018-09-25T08:42:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=69653"},"modified":"2018-09-25T10:42:09","modified_gmt":"2018-09-25T08:42:09","slug":"malawi-investment-rates-low-afdb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/09\/25\/malawi-investment-rates-low-afdb\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawi investment rates low\u2014AfDB"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Rebecca Chimjeka: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Akinwumi-Adesina-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-69656\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Akinwumi-Adesina-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Akinwumi-Adesina-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Akinwumi-Adesina-1-90x60.jpg 90w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Akinwumi-Adesina-1-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Akinwumi-Adesina-1-95x64.jpg 95w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Akinwumi-Adesina-1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/ozabs-uk-nigeria-debt-idAFKBN1D13P9-OZABS\">African Development Bank<\/a> (AfDB) has said it is worried with the lowest rates of the country\u2019s total investment percentage among sub-Saharan African countries.<\/p>\n<p>It is estimated that Malawi\u2019s total investment in sub-Saharan Africa in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is at 12.9 percent due to low rate of private sector investments.<\/p>\n<p>AfDB Country Manager, Eyerusalem Fasika, spoke to <em>The Daily Times <\/em>about Malawi\u2019s low investment during a road show held ahead of the launch of the first-ever African Investment Forum (AIF) scheduled for Johannesburg, South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Fasika said the forum offers Malawi an opportunity to showcase bankable investment projects which AfDB can facilitate funding on.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe Malawi economy has, over the years, featured low levels of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/weak-industrialisation-who-is-to-blame\/\">industrialisation<\/a> with the industry only contributing 14.35 percent to GDP in 2017 compared to 32 percent of the same in 1990,\u201d<\/em> Fasika said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She said it was for this reason that the bank is launching the forum which is aimed at helping sub- Saharan African countries, including Malawi, to support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/political-will-key-to-industrialisation\/\">industrialisation<\/a> through private sector investments, entrepreneurship and innovation.<\/p>\n<p>AIF would help attract investors for project proposals to close investment gaps among African countries including Malawi.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi Investment Trade Centre Executive Director, Clement Kumbambe, said the forum could help Malawi and other African countries showcase investments projects.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cI, therefore, call upon all Malawian investors to make sure that they have well-structured investment projects which will enable them attract funding,\u201d<\/em> Kumbambe said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Recently, AfDB President, Akinwumi Adesina, said the forum is among initiatives designed to accelerate economic development in Africa.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Rebecca Chimjeka: African Development Bank (AfDB) has said it is worried with the lowest rates of the country\u2019s total investment percentage among sub-Saharan African countries.
