{"id":69372,"date":"2018-09-18T09:56:46","date_gmt":"2018-09-18T07:56:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=69372"},"modified":"2018-09-18T09:56:47","modified_gmt":"2018-09-18T07:56:47","slug":"escom-reverts-to-old-slogan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/09\/18\/escom-reverts-to-old-slogan\/","title":{"rendered":"Escom reverts to old slogan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Taonga Sabola:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69377\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69377\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/allexon-chiwaya.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-69377\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/allexon-chiwaya-300x134.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/allexon-chiwaya-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/allexon-chiwaya-768x342.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/allexon-chiwaya.jpg 820w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69377\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SEALED\u2014Escom Chief Executive Officer, Allexon Chiwaya, signs a PPA with JCM Director, Peter Grey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) has said it has reverted to its old slogan \u2018Power All Day Every Day\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The development comes after the firm was accused of selling false promises to Malawians as they struggled to have power all day every day.<\/p>\n<p>This resulted in Escom adopting a new pay-off line of Towards Power All Day Every Day.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Blantyre on Thursday when the firm signed power purchasing agreements (PPAs) with two independent power producers (IPPs) JCM Solar and Mulanje Hydro Limited, Escom Chairman, Thomson Mpinganjira, said reverting to the old slogan would help the company to aspire for the best.<\/p>\n<p>Mpinganjira said Escom is committed to providing Malawians with power all day every day.<\/p>\n<p>But Consumers Association of Malawi (Cama) Executive Director, John Kapito, Sunday described the move by Escom as childish.<\/p>\n<p>Kapito said it is shocking to hear that Escom has reverted to the old slogan at the time the energy situation in the country has worsened.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cAt the time we were forcing them to remove that, the energy situation was even better and it is now shocking to hear that they have gone back to it when the power situation has worsened.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAccording to Section 35 of the Consumer Protection Act, you don\u2019t advertise for a product which you don\u2019t have,\u201d<\/em> Kapito said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He added that Cama has written Escom and has given it seven days to change the slogan, failing which the power supplier would be dragged to court.<\/p>\n<p>During the signing ceremony, Mpinganjira, said the country\u2019s power challenges would be a thing of the past after 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The PPAs will see JCM setting up a 60 megawatt (MW) solar power plant in Salima and another 20MW power plant at Golomoti in Dedza.<\/p>\n<p>The deals will also see Mulanje Hydro Limited setting up an 8MW mini hydro power station in Mulanje.<\/p>\n<p>Mpinganjira said Escom is doing everything possible to ensure that power situation improves by engaging IPPs and ensuring that the country has a diversified energy source.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Taonga Sabola: The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) has said it has reverted to its old slogan \u2018Power All Day Every Day\u2019.
