{"id":69157,"date":"2018-09-07T08:57:47","date_gmt":"2018-09-07T06:57:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=69157"},"modified":"2018-09-07T08:57:47","modified_gmt":"2018-09-07T06:57:47","slug":"dramatist-smith-likongwe-to-release-new-book","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/09\/07\/dramatist-smith-likongwe-to-release-new-book\/","title":{"rendered":"Dramatist Smith Likongwe to release new book"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Sam Banda Jnr: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69158\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69158\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/filling-the-void.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-69158\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/filling-the-void-300x241.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/filling-the-void-300x241.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/filling-the-void-45x35.jpg 45w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/filling-the-void.jpg 454w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69158\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FILLING THE VOID\u2014The cover of the book<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>After launching two books of plays, The Chief\u2019s Blanket and Other Plays <\/em>and <em>Living Playscripts: A Trilogy <\/em>with The Chancellor College Travelling Theatre recently, renowned drama lecturer and playwright <a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/let-us-look-at-our-own-works-smith-likongwe\/\">Smith Likongwe<\/a> is set to release one more book this month.<\/p>\n<p>Likongwe said Thursday the book, titled <em>Southern African Plays Collection<\/em>, is ready.<\/p>\n<p>Edited by Likongwe and published by Pan African Publishers under Shadreck Chikoti, the collection brings together five plays written by eight distinguished playwrights from Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Likongwe said the book has works of established and upcoming, black and white as well as male and female playwrights.<\/p>\n<p>In the collection, Likongwe, from University of Malawi, contributes <em>The President\u2019s Prerogative<\/em>; Dr Cheela Chilala from the University of Zambia has <em>Blood Ties<\/em>; multi-award winning Blessing Hungwe and Rumbidzai Karize from Zimbabwe have contributed <em>Burn Mukwerekwere, Burn<\/em>; world renowned theatre giant Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom and Mothusi Mokoto from South Africa have the unparalleled and sexually poignant <em>Cards<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a collection of a play by Tau Maserumule and Robyn McHarry from South Africa, <em>Strategy of Grey<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Likongwe said the Southern African plays collection is the first of its kind.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cPreviously there have been no known publications of a collection of plays transcending the borders of one country within the Southern African region,\u201d<\/em> Likongwe said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He said one of the works on record is <em>African Women Playwrights, <\/em>which is an anthology consisting of nine plays by a diverse group of women from the African continent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOther than that, there have only been collections of plays from within a country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Sam Banda Jnr: After launching two books of plays, The Chief\u2019s Blanket and Other Plays and Living Playscripts: A Trilogy with The Chancellor College Travelling Theatre recently, renowned drama lecturer and playwright Smith Likongwe is set to release one more book this month.
