{"id":69032,"date":"2018-09-03T11:25:43","date_gmt":"2018-09-03T09:25:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=69032"},"modified":"2018-09-03T15:05:59","modified_gmt":"2018-09-03T13:05:59","slug":"shemu-joyahs-film-triumphs-at-amvcas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/09\/03\/shemu-joyahs-film-triumphs-at-amvcas\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawian film wins best southern Africa movie at AMVCAs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Sam Banda:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Joya.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-69044 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Joya-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a>[dropcap]M[\/dropcap]alawian filmmaker, Charles Shemu Joyah, on Saturday made history when he won his movie, <em>The Road to Sunrise<\/em>, won the Best Movie \u2013Southern Africa category<em>\u00a0<\/em>during the 2018 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCAs) held in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>Joyah\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/the-road-to-sunrise-goes-to-m-theatre\/\"><em>The Road to Sunrise <\/em><\/a>outclassed four other films including <em>Nyasaland <\/em>by compatriot Joyce Mhango Chavula.<\/p>\n<p>The other films are <em>Descent <\/em>by Awal Abdulfatai, <em>Salute <\/em>by Philippe Talavera and <em>Jomako Black Democracy <\/em>by Abraham Kabwe.<\/p>\n<p>It was not the first time for Malawi to win this award as the first recipient was Chavula in 2016 with her film <em>Lilongwe<\/em>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Joyah, who has also won awards with his two other movies <em>Seasons of a Life <\/em>and <em>The Last Fishing Boat<\/em>, said Sunday, he was not sure of winning the award.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cFrankly speaking I was not sure that we would win for I had watched the trailers of the films we were competing with on YouTube and the quality was amazing. So I was over the moon when the film was announced winner,\u201d Joyah said.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He said the quality of African films is getting better every day.<\/p>\n<p>Joyah, who returns home today, said the exposure the platform has offered is immense and that he hopes to see this \u201cbenefit us in our attempt to get better distribution for our film\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00a0\u201cWe want to start screening the film this month and shortly we will announce the schedule starting with Lilongwe,\u201d he said<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>The Road to Sunrise <\/em>was also nominated in the category of Best Overall Movie but it failed to grab the award which went to <em>18 Hours <\/em>by Phoebe Ruguru.<\/p>\n<p>Joyah\u2019s film also received seven nominations in this year\u2019s Africa Movie Academy Awards (Amaa) set to be held on September 22 in Rwanda.<\/p>\n<p>The other Malawian films nominated in Amaa are Chavula\u2019s <em>Nyasaland <\/em>and Flora Suya\u2019s <em>My Mother\u2019s Story<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Chavula, who failed to win an award this time, congratulated Joyah for the award.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am excited for Joyah because it has gone to Malawi and the fact that I was part of the film during casting stage makes it even sweeter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s AMVCAs had many great films just looking at the list of nominees and it\u2019s so humbling to have been one of them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Chavula said Malawi was well represented but was quick to say that there is need to up the game if \u201cwe are to come back next year\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Nyasaland <\/em>will continue its festival rounds for now before its put on the market and that may take a while,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Held at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, the red carpet event which was beamed live on Africa Magic attracted several players in the film industry.<\/p>\n<p>There were 27 categories in total.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Sam Banda: [dropcap]M[\/dropcap]alawian filmmaker, Charles Shemu Joyah, on Saturday made history when he won his movie, The Road to Sunrise, won the Best Movie \u2013Southern Africa category\u00a0during the 2018 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCAs) held in Nigeria.
