[dropcap]T[\/dropcap]imes Group, Malawi’s biggest media group has signed a partnership agreement with BBC, which will see the media group broadcast live the popular Focus on Africa<\/a> programme, Sport Africa and other BBC content on television and radio<\/p>\n

BBC Head of Business Development in Africa, Mary Lubisa, said this is a two year-long deal aimed at reaching out to more people across Africa among others. The\u00a0signing ceremony took place on Friday at Times Group Headquarters in Blantyre.<\/p>\n

Other interesting BBC programmes which Times Television will air are Africa Eye\u2014an investigative strand and What\u2019s New\u2014a kids programme.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am very excited about the new partnership which we have signed with one of Malawi\u2019s leading media houses because it means a lot to the BBC. Malawi is a very significant market for us. We are hoping that with this new content we will be able to grow audiences. So we believe that with that growth in audience Times will be able to convert that to revenue,\u201d she said.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Times Group Commercial Manager, Dumisani Ngulube, said the partnership will help its staff to hone skills in production of TV and Radio programmes.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cIt is our expectation that the collaboration with BBC will give us an opportunity to benefit from skills transfer in production of quality programs, carrying out joint productions with BBC, receive mentorship to improve in our systems and human resources capacity,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Ngulube also said the partnership will give the national broadcaster an opportunity to sharpen online media for the new generation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are now working towards improving the use of new online media and this relationship with BBC will assist us accelerate the realisation of that dream for the benefit of the new generation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Times Group hopes the BBC\u2019s Focus on Africa programme will in the long run be produced by the local TV in Chichewa version for the benefit of citizens of Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe who speak the native language.<\/p>\n

Globally BBC aims at reaching out to 500 million people weekly as currently, 122 million people are reached in Africa.<\/p>\n
