{"id":68950,"date":"2018-08-17T17:13:29","date_gmt":"2018-08-17T15:13:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=68950"},"modified":"2018-08-17T17:13:30","modified_gmt":"2018-08-17T15:13:30","slug":"govt-told-to-reform-or-abolish-admarc-to-end-hunger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/08\/17\/govt-told-to-reform-or-abolish-admarc-to-end-hunger\/","title":{"rendered":"Govt told to reform or abolish Admarc to end hunger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>By Erick Msikiti<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37948\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37948\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/admarc-offices.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-37948\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/admarc-offices-300x119.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"119\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/admarc-offices-300x119.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/admarc-offices-768x304.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/admarc-offices.jpg 820w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37948\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">Admarc offices<\/span><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>[dropcap]G[\/dropcap]overnment should either abolish the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) or reform the grain marketer if the country is to end hunger.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifpri.org\">International Food Policy Research Institute<\/a>\u00a0 (IFPRI) preliminary finds and recommendations made under the Zero Hunger and Malnutrition Strategic Review (ZHMSR) aimed at identifying key challenges the country faces \u00a0on to eliminate hunger and malnutrition by 2030.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cAs a country we are on the right course towards ending hunger by 2030, but there is need for political will to reform Admarc, which is one of the important agencies if Malawi is to realize this aspiration,\u201d said Grace Kumchulesi, a researcher at IFPRI \u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The report now suggests that a proper role for Admarc in the functioning of the country\u2019s food and agriculture markets.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny profit orientation on the part of Admarc should be challenged, the organization\u2019s primary role today should be as part of the country\u2019s food system and not that of broad agricultural development despite its name, but if it (Admarc) is to be retained as a mechanism by which the Malawian government can intervene in food markets, it (the government) must invest in reform and transparency.\u201d reads the report in part.<\/p>\n<p>The report also notes that it will be difficult for most Malawians to achieve food security and assure the nutritional well being of their children through subsistence farming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is required for Malawians in the longer term is an expansion in attractive employment in the non-agricultural sectors that will involve movement away from agriculture sectors for many households.\u201d The report suggests.<\/p>\n<p>A spate of alleged dubious activities at Admarc like the Malawi-Zambia maize procurement deal, for example, have in recent history tarnished the grain marketer\u2019s image.<\/p>\n<p>Admarc has also been blamed for lack of proper timing to procure crops from farmers which has led to the exploitation of smallholder farmers by vendors.<\/p>\n<p>Though the ministry of Finance is yet to release this year\u2019s Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Report (Mvac), reports indicate more Malawians are likely to face hunger this year, than those who faced food shortages last year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; By Erick Msikiti [dropcap]G[\/dropcap]overnment should either abolish the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) or reform the grain marketer if the country is to end hunger.
