{"id":68696,"date":"2018-07-26T10:50:57","date_gmt":"2018-07-26T08:50:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=68696"},"modified":"2018-07-26T10:51:00","modified_gmt":"2018-07-26T08:51:00","slug":"hitches-affect-voter-registration-phase-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/07\/26\/hitches-affect-voter-registration-phase-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Hitches affect voter registration phase 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>BY GLADSON M\u2019BUMPHA, SAMUEL DUNCAN AND BLESSINGS KANG\u2019OMBE:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) Chairperson, Jane Ansah, has admitted that the second phase of voter registration was marred by technical problems, but is quick to say everything is on track.<\/p>\n<p>Ansah was speaking on Tuesday in Ntchisi District when she visited some of the registration centres in the district.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am satisfied with the good turnout.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, I admit that the second phase of voter registration has been affected by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/more-challenges-in-voter-registration\/\">technical problems<\/a>, where some kits are not operating,\u201d Ansah said.<\/p>\n<p>Ntchisi District has, so far, registered 83,000 people against the projected number of 163,000.<\/p>\n<p>Ansah said they expect that more people will register.<\/p>\n<p>In Another development, Civic Education, Culture and Community Development Minister, Grace Obama Chiumia has, asked stakeholders to continue sensitising people to the importance of registering in the on-going <a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/mec-chairperson-bemoans-low-voter-registration-in-salima\/\">registration exercise.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Speaking when s h e conducted a voter registration awareness campaign at Nkhotakota Boma, Chiumia said proper sensitisation would help voters exercise their constitutional right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the people do not understand the entire exercise while some people think that a national identification card will give them a chance to vote,\u201d Chiumia said.<\/p>\n<p>Sub-Traditional Authority Nkhanga asked his subjects to register so that they can be able to vote in next year\u2019s elections.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, electoral stakeholders in Ntcheu District have said political party monitors are crucial in enhancing free and fair elections.<\/p>\n<p>The sentiments follow a day-long training for monitors belonging to the main opposition party Malawi Congress Party.<\/p>\n<p>National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Public Trust organised the training to build the capacity of party monitors.<\/p>\n<p>Ntcheu Nice District Civic Education Officer, Alinafe Chikakuda, challenged party monitors to be active in all processes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople involved in the election process should be aware of what is needed,\u201d Chikakuda said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY GLADSON M\u2019BUMPHA, SAMUEL DUNCAN AND BLESSINGS KANG\u2019OMBE: Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) Chairperson, Jane Ansah, has admitted that the second phase of voter registration was marred by technical problems, but is quick to say everything is on track.
