{"id":68694,"date":"2018-07-26T10:44:55","date_gmt":"2018-07-26T08:44:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=68694"},"modified":"2018-07-26T10:44:55","modified_gmt":"2018-07-26T08:44:55","slug":"circumcision-drive-bears-fruit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/07\/26\/circumcision-drive-bears-fruit\/","title":{"rendered":"Circumcision drive bears fruit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>BY RACHEL MPHEPO: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Population Services International (PSI) h a s described the Voluntary Medical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-aids-conference-circumcision-1\/circumcision-could-save-millions-from-aids-studies-idUSSYD18190020070724\">Male Circumcision<\/a> campaign stakeholders in health service provision launched in 2013 as successful, saying 150,000 people have been circumcised since 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Campaign Manager, Kenneth Sikumbiri, said this on Tuesday at the onset of a two-day-tour for journalists. It is aimed at giving journalists first-hand experience of what PSI is doing while drumming up support for male circumcision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cActually, our target is to 18,500 people this year. We target males aged between 10 and 49 years,\u201d Sikumbiri said.<\/p>\n<p>Among other places, journalists visited hospitals where voluntary medical male circumcision is being done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince 2013 we have extended our reach. We started with Blantyre in 2013 and, later, in 2013, went to Chiradzulu and Mangochi districts. In 2015, we were [back] in Blantyre, Chiradzulu and Mangochi and, in 2016, we scaled up to Mulanje and Phalombe districts. Come 2017 and 2018, we dropped Mangochi so we are operating in four districts,\u201d Sikumbiri said.<\/p>\n<p>Blantyre District Environmental Health Officer, Penjani Chunda, said, since the campaign was rolled out, cases of sexually transmitted infections have declined.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe initiative has also helped us reduce cases of cervical cancer,\u201d Chunda said.<\/p>\n<p>Registered nurse and midwife, Chisomo Nkalozwa- Kayenda, said the campaign is going well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anything, the only challenge is that most of our clients are aged between 10 and 17 years; as such, they are supposed to be accompanied by parents but this does not often happen.
