[dropcap]G[\/dropcap]overnment has withdrawn the Vice President Saulos Chilima’s<\/a> security detail with immediate effect,\u00a0 the vice president’s spokesperson said late Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s true that today we were informed that the Vice President will not be accorded some of privileges his office is entitled to including his security,\u201d said Pilirani Phiri, spokesperson for the Vice President\u2019s office.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The decision comes immediately after Chilima announced that he had resigned from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party and launched a new party to stifle a challenge from his boss, President Peter Mutharika<\/div>\n

A letter signed by Chief Secretary to the government Lloyd Muhara, addressed to all Principal Secretaries, and Heads of Departments, government said it will only accord privileges to the Vice President when he is performing government functions.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

“In compliance with the legal requirement, I wish to remind all the addressees that the Right Honorable Vice President should only be accorded such privileges and benefits as prescribed by law whenever government is performing government business,” reads the letter in part without specifically mentioning the privileges that have been stripped off.<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The decision is not surprising to many because government has in the last few months been at daggers drawn with Chilima over a leadership wrangle in the ruling party.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Two weeks ago, the President dropped Chilima as a minister in charge of disaster preparedness and moved the portfolio to OPC. <\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Chilima has also been boycotting all government functions.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Last Saturday Chilima launched the United Transformation Movement in Lilongwe where he warned that he would arrest anyone reported to have become rich corruptly.<\/span><\/div>\n
