{"id":68571,"date":"2018-07-24T09:45:05","date_gmt":"2018-07-24T07:45:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=68571"},"modified":"2018-07-24T09:45:05","modified_gmt":"2018-07-24T07:45:05","slug":"malawi-under-17-rout-zimbabwe-5-0","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/07\/24\/malawi-under-17-rout-zimbabwe-5-0\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawi Under-17 rout Zimbabwe 5-0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>BY PETER KANJERE: <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/malawi-under-17-passes-age-test-face-angola\/\">Malawi under-17<\/a> national football team put their Cosafa Championship campaign back on track after routing Zimbabwe 5-0 at Francois Xavier Stadium in Port Louis, Mauritius, Monday, but the semi-finals\u2019 path is not cleared yet.<\/p>\n<p>The Deklerk Msakakuona boys, who were inspired by a double from man-of-the-match Patrick Mwaungulu, must beat Swaziland Wednesday in a decisive Group C qualifying match and hope that the eliminated Zimbabwe should defeat Angola on the same day.<\/p>\n<p>Swaziland and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.times.mw\/malawi-under-17-lose-to-angola\/\">Angola<\/a> beat Zimbabwe and Malawi 3-2 and 1-0, respectively, on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Later Monday, Angola thrashed Swaziland 4-0 to qualify for the semi-final with six points from two games.<\/p>\n<p>In a post-match interview Monday, Msakakuona hailed his boys for sticking to the attacking game-plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew that if we scored first, we could manage to keep the lead,\u201d Msakakuona said.<\/p>\n<p>The win took the third-placed junior Flames\u2019 tally to three points from two games. Only winners of each of the three four-member groups will sail through to the semi-finals while being joined by overall best loser.<\/p>\n<p>During the match, Mwaungulu put Malawi ahead in the fourth minute before Tatenda Mbalaka doubled the lead to make the most of Zimbabwe\u2019s sloppy defending.<\/p>\n<p>Zimbabwe reportedly failed to cope with the pace and trickery of Malawi, who led 2-0 going into half-time break.<\/p>\n<p>In the second-half, Zimbabwe tried to crawl their way back into the game through Tanaka Matenga and John Bonomali but they could not find a way past Malawi\u2019s defence.<\/p>\n<p>The junior Flames put the game beyond Zimbabwe\u2019s reach when Francis Mtoso scored the third goal before Mwaungulu claimed his second goal and Malawi\u2019s fourth in the 77th minute.<\/p>\n<p>Two minutes later, Emmanuel Mitole completed the rout, before referee Mokani Gobagoba from Botswana blew the final whistle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Line up: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Malawi: <\/strong>Kennedy Nankhama, Kesten Simbi, Blessings Mpokera, Mitole, Mwaungulu, Francis Mtoso (c), Vitumbiko Nyirenda, Mbalaka, Gift Jossam, Patrick Mponda, Lovemore Mbeta<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY PETER KANJERE: Malawi under-17 national football team put their Cosafa Championship campaign back on track after routing Zimbabwe 5-0 at Francois Xavier Stadium in Port Louis, Mauritius, Monday, but the semi-finals\u2019 path is not cleared yet.
