This campaign, clubs would earn more if gate fraud would be addressed in the second round.

As usual, Big Bullets and Be Forward Wanderers are the first round’s top earners having pocketed K17, 171,312 and K15,150, 948 in that order. They are followed by Lilongwe rivals, Silver Strikers and Civo United, who received K6, 877,420 and K3, 759,005 respectively.

Surprisingly, a Bullets player speaking on condition of anonymity, insisted that while they are comparatively getting paid on time this year, the take-home has remained stagnant.

Big club in Malawi pay each player as little as K2 000 in weekly training allowance and an added monthly upkeep averaging K6 000.

Bullets vice-treasurer, Alex Gondwe, said the club did not struggle to pay players’ bonuses, allowances and upkeep because of the increased gate proceeds.

“As Bullets, we are impressed with the gate proceeds in the first round, but we would have loved that other policies should be reviewed so that teams get huge chunk of money in a single game. We are of the view that other stakeholders do not deserve to get something from the gate collections,” said Gondwe.

Wanderers’ vice-treasurer, Chulu Mkangama, said the improved performance of the teams contributed to the increased gate revenue.

“Get collections have indeed helped us, as this season, administration costs increased especially to pay for lodging and food for the players we brought to the team,” Mkangama said in a written response.

“Last year, we collected approximately K11.5million and half-way through the season we have surpassed the figure and we expect to get more in the second round.”

On the list of the first round clubs earnings, Airborne Rangers and Mafco are the first round’s lowest earners after pocketing K1, 701,913 and K1, 900,112 respectively.

In the first round, Sulom and Football Association of Malawi (Fam) got K14, 291,869 and K14, 284,788 respectively.

Other stakeholders such as the Police, Cashiers, Stewards received a total of K48,322,908, representing 35 percent of the gross while Malawi National Council of Sports and ground owners earned K6,724,808 and K35,890,061 in that order.

Commenting on the figures, Somba-Banda, said despite the strides made in gate collections, the league governing body had noted some challenges, which needs addressing in the second round.

“Apart from increase in gate charges, these positive collections have come about because of reforms and strict controls we are implementing in the gate management and the whole revenue process. We started taking charge of ticket production of some selected games and this has substantially reduced fake tickets,” explained Somba- Banda.

The 2015 TNM Super League first round— despite perennial fraud— grossed K191, 359,606 in gate collections, up from K85, 652,130 realised at the same stage last campaign, hence representing 123 percent increase.
