{"id":68344,"date":"2018-07-14T07:14:39","date_gmt":"2018-07-14T05:14:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=68344"},"modified":"2018-07-14T07:16:12","modified_gmt":"2018-07-14T05:16:12","slug":"gerald-phiri-named-carlsberg-cup-ambassador","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/07\/14\/gerald-phiri-named-carlsberg-cup-ambassador\/","title":{"rendered":"Gerald Phiri named Carlsberg Cup ambassador"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by <strong>Williams Gondwa: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>South Africa-based Flames\u2019 midfielder, Gerald Phiri junior, has been appointed as the 2018 Carlsberg Cup brand ambassador, sponsor, Castel Malawi Limited Managing Director, Gilles Leclerc, announced yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have chosen Phiri because he is a product of Carlsberg Cup and based on his good personality and exploits in the game,\u201d Leclerc said during the re-launch ceremony for the cup at Mpira Village in Chiwembe Township in Blantyre yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>He then pledged continued sponsorship of the cup, which remains pegged at K40 million, despite the change in management at their company from Carlsberg Malawi Limited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCastel Malawi Limited will roll out the Carlsberg Cup 2018 edition as one of the initiatives to celebrate 50 years of Carlsberg brand in Malawi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a good corporate citizen, we feel duty-bound to support the government in football development and contribute to the enhancement of socio-economic fabric of the country through various sponsorships,\u201d Leclerc said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on his son\u2019s behalf, Gerald Phiri Senior, said: \u201cWe are very thankful for the recognition. I am hope that Phiri junior will motivate others players to work hard in this tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks, Football Association of Malawi president, Walter Nyamilandu, warned teams that would take part in the tournament to observe fair-play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe contribution that Carlsberg Cup has made to the development of football, over these years, cannot be over-emphasised. Over the years, we have seen many players being identified through Carlsberg Cup.<\/p>\n<p>The cup will see 16 Super League teams being seeded while paving the way for regional teams to battle it out for top-32 slots.
