{"id":68111,"date":"2018-07-05T21:35:29","date_gmt":"2018-07-05T19:35:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=68111"},"modified":"2018-07-05T21:35:29","modified_gmt":"2018-07-05T19:35:29","slug":"mutharika-lashes-out-at-donors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/07\/05\/mutharika-lashes-out-at-donors\/","title":{"rendered":"Mutharika lashes out at donors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>By Mandy Pondani<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Peter Mutharika on Thursday lashed out at donors saying they should refrain from commenting on the country\u2019s internal political matters because \u201cthey are guests and not citizens of Malawi\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/malawi-economy-reforms-idUSL8N1IV2M4\">Western donors<\/a> offer Malawi a life line offering support to different sectors, crucial to the country\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_68046\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68046\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/peter-mutharika-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-68046\" src=\"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/peter-mutharika-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/peter-mutharika-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/peter-mutharika-1-32x32.jpg 32w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-68046\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mutharika &#8211; Malawi is a sovereign state<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But just like his elder brother, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/...president\/malawis-president-mutharika-dead-idUSBRE835\">Bingu wa Mutharika<\/a>, the President believes that the assistance does not mean they have the carte blanche to get involved in Malawi\u2019s internal politics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t interfere in the politics of this country\u2026You are guests of this country, you are not citizens,\u201d a visibly annoyed Mutharika said.<\/p>\n<p>He was speaking in the northern city of Mzuzu where he is to celebrate 54 years of independence on Friday.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This is a sovereign issue, Mutharika charged, it is foreigners who are confusing this country and they have to stop that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will not allow that in as long as I am alive this country to be neo-colonized,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The President was apparently responding to the comments made by the EU Ambassador Marchel Germann and US Ambassador Virginia Palmer on the leaked ACB report.<\/p>\n<p>The two diplomats called for an independent probe into the fraud at the Malawi Police Service in which Mutharika is being implicated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know how the money is moving around, I am not stupid! I know what I am doing. Some of the people have revolted against me within the party for the love of money, I call on everyone to respect this,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The last few days Mutharika has been defensive as he tries to distant himself from the alleged fraud at police headquarters.
