Malawians will now have a chance to sample top-class German football for free after Malawi\u2019s leading media house, the Times Group, partnered StarTimes Media to beam live Bundesliga games on Times Television.<\/p>\n
Times Group has signed a two-year contract with StarTimes, a Chinese digital television media company with branches in several African countries.<\/p>\n
The agreement will enable Times Television to be the first local television to have exclusive broadcast rights for the German top league.<\/p>\n
Times Television will broadcast two live matches every weekend plus highlights and analysis programmes on the Bundesliga.<\/p>\n
StarTimes Sales and Marketing Manager, Schlosser Msubango, said the agreement would go a long way in making sure soccer-loving Malawians enjoy German football.<\/p>\n
Msubango said a total of 34 games would be beamed live on Times Television.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are sure that Malawians will enjoy the [Bundasliga] games,\u201d Msubango said.<\/p>\n
Times Group Chief Commercial Manager, Dumisani Ngulube, said beaming Bundesliga would bring diversity.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is important that Malawians enjoy diversity. The last couple of years we have seen Malawians enjoying the English Premier League (CPL), but we felt it is important to have diversity and this diversity is in Bundesliga,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know Germans are known for perfect and precision engineering and they are equally known in football. They are the current Fifa World Cup champions and if you have noticed in Uefa champions, German teams always make it to the top and most times it\u2019s a German affair.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ngulube was confident that Times Television would succeed in winning viewers who are used to watching the EPL.<\/p>\n
\u201cChallenges will always be there. As a business we believe in getting around challenges, we believe in getting solutions for challenges. But also what is important is that most of the players in EPL are coming from other leagues and one of the biggest suppliers of players to the EPL is the Bundesliga,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is important is that we want to bring Malawians to the source of football. Most of the players that you see in EPL are those that have grown from other leagues, so why not show Malawians where these big players are coming from? We think it\u2019s going to be exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n
The party starts on August 14 as defending champions Bayern Munich takes on Hamburger SV in the opening match.<\/p>\n
The Bundesliga, founded in 1962, is a football league with the highest average stadium attendance worldwide world with an average of 45,134 fans per game.<\/p>\n
It is contested by 18 teams and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the lower league (2 Bundesliga).<\/p>\n
The Bundesliga season runs from August to May with most games played on Saturdays and Sundays and a few games played during weekdays.<\/p>\n
Bayern Munich have won the Bundesliga the most, winning the title 24 times.<\/p>\n
Other teams that have won the Bundesliga are Borussia Dortmund, Hamburger SV, Werder Bremen, Borussia M\u00f6nchengladbach and VfB Stuttgart.<\/p>\n
