French Honorary Consul to Malawi Luc Deschamps said on Saturday he was satisfied with the performances of the finalists in the inaugural French Song and Storytelling grand finale held at Jacaranda Cultural Centre in Blantyre.<\/p>\n

He said he was now working very hard to make sure that in the second edition, the winners have a chance to travel to France for a short course and tour.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to thank the coordinator of the competition Poya Chapweteka, who happens to be the Jacaranda Cultural Centre and Maison de la France Director of French Studies, for a job well done. We have seen the best in the competition,\u201d Deschamps said.<\/p>\n

He said the competition is part of promoting the speaking of the French language which he said is an international language.<\/p>\n

Deschamps said the French song and storytelling competition is just one of the programmes they have on the ground apart from the drama contest that are aimed at promoting and teaching of the French language in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe French drama competition is coming up in November and so there is a lot and we are planning to invite a top French artist to grace the grand finale and also hold some concerts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He also said that the French contests apart from promoting the French language, have also been instrumental in unearthing talent.<\/p>\n

Nine finalists from Mzuzu University and Domasi Teachers Training College battled it out in the storytelling competition.<\/p>\n

Henry Kaitano Banda from Mzuni came first and received K50,000 while Ishmael Chimenya and Blessings Njembe from Domasi came second and third and received K30,000 and K20,000 respectively.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never saw this coming. I am excited to have come first and I just want to encourage people to learn the French language,\u201d Banda said.<\/p>\n

The judges for the storytelling contest were Maxwell Chilembwe and Prince Chimasula from Chancellor College as well as Mathieu Bondo from Imperial Academy.<\/p>\n

In the song contest Christabel Rudi from St Michaels Girls, who performed the song \u2018Sur Ma Route\u2019, by Black M came first receiving K25,000.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love French and so winning has motivated me to continue working hard in the subject. My dream actually is to go to France,\u201d Rudi said.<\/p>\n

The second and third positions winners received K20,000 and K15,000.<\/p>\n

The second position went to Bridget Mkandawire from Marymount, who dished out \u2018Papaoutai\u2019, by Stromae.<\/p>\n

There was actually a tie on position three which went to Rosario Nyondo from Marymount and Vanessa Litta from Jacaranda School of Orphans.<\/p>\n

The judges for the song contest were Dr Timwa Lipenga and Kondwani Simbota from Chancellor College and Claire-Lise Harrison from St Andrews High School.<\/p>\n

Lipenga said they based their selection on among others, clarity in French language and confidence.<\/p>\n

All the finalists during the grand finale also received a dictionary and books.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
