{"id":67756,"date":"2018-06-29T16:04:14","date_gmt":"2018-06-29T14:04:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=67756"},"modified":"2018-06-29T16:04:15","modified_gmt":"2018-06-29T14:04:15","slug":"malawi-house-speaker-quits-mcp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/06\/29\/malawi-house-speaker-quits-mcp\/","title":{"rendered":"#Malawi House Speaker quits MCP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BY TIMES REPORTER:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaker of the National Assembly, Richard Msowoya, has quit from main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) where he was deputy president.<\/p>\n<p>MCP is Malawi&#8217;s oldest political party and many believe the party is expected to win next year&#8217;s election \u201cI have decided to resign from the Malawi Congress Party because the party\u2019s current state does not represent what its founders set as cornerstones of the party,\u201d Msowoya told Journalists in Lilongwe on Friday<\/p>\n<p>He said he will serve the rest of the term as an independent member of parliament.<\/p>\n<p>Msowoya, however, could not deny nor confirm whether he is destined to join the Chilima Movement, a breakaway faction from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party led by the country\u2019s Vice President Saulos Chilima<\/p>\n<p>He is among a few names being mentioned to partner Chilima\u2019s presidential bid Msowoya and four others were suspended from the country\u2019s oldest party early this year over a leadership wrangle.<\/p>\n<p>Msowoya rose to become Speaker of parliament on the party ticket but following his resignation, it was not clear whether he automatically loses his position too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY TIMES REPORTER: Speaker of the National Assembly, Richard Msowoya, has quit from main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) where he was deputy president.
