{"id":67553,"date":"2018-06-26T08:44:07","date_gmt":"2018-06-26T06:44:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=67553"},"modified":"2018-06-26T08:44:07","modified_gmt":"2018-06-26T06:44:07","slug":"yunus-mussa-withdraws-from-dpp-vice-president-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/06\/26\/yunus-mussa-withdraws-from-dpp-vice-president-race\/","title":{"rendered":"Yunus Mussa withdraws from DPP vice-president race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>BY FESTON MALEKEZO<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Zomba Central Constituency aspiring Member of Parliament (MP) Yunus Mussa has withdrawn from contesting as vice-president for the Eastern Region.<\/p>\n<p>Mussa was expected to challenge Minister of Education, Science and Technology Bright Msaka on the position at the party\u2019s elective convention slated for July 1-3 this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few days ago, it was reported I had expressed interest to contest for the position of DPP vice-president for the Eastern Region at the forthcoming convention. I, indeed, expressed that interest at that time. However, since that time, I have given further consideration to the matter and I consulted widely among my political advisers, my supporters and members of my family,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mussa said he wants to concentrate on a parliamentary seat which he lost in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have also come to further conclusion that my role in DPP will be more effective if I concentrated on Zomba Central Constituency and as a Member of Parliament. If you may recall in 2014 elections, we [DPP] garnered over 37,000 votes for President [Peter Mutharika] in Zomba City and the entire Zomba District we got over 220,000 votes for President Mutharika, so I would want to consolidate and add more votes for the President in the forthcoming elections,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He has, however, dismissed reports that DPP has anchored some national governing council positions in the regions as a move which has prompted his withdrawal.<\/p>\n<p>Msaka was appointed DPP\u2019s vice-president for the region after Mussa lost his seat during the May 2014 Tripartite Elections.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Kondwani Nankhumwa has come in the open to challenge former minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development George Chaponda for the vice-presidency of Southern Region.<\/p>\n<p>While in the Central Region, Uladi Mussa is set to challenge incumbent vice-president Hetherwick Ntaba.<\/p>\n<p>It is still not clear as to who will contest for the position of vice-president in the Northern Region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY FESTON MALEKEZO Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Zomba Central Constituency aspiring Member of Parliament (MP) Yunus Mussa has withdrawn from contesting as vice-president for the Eastern Region.
