{"id":67225,"date":"2018-06-21T09:50:52","date_gmt":"2018-06-21T07:50:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=67225"},"modified":"2018-06-21T09:50:52","modified_gmt":"2018-06-21T07:50:52","slug":"south-sudan-rebel-chief-in-ethiopia-for-talks-with-kiir","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/06\/21\/south-sudan-rebel-chief-in-ethiopia-for-talks-with-kiir\/","title":{"rendered":"South Sudan rebel chief in Ethiopia for talks with Kiir"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Sudan\u2019s rebel leader, Riek Machar, arrived in Ethiopia for a meeting with President Salva Kiir, as part of talks to try to negotiate an end to a five-year civil war, a rebel spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can confirm to you that our chairman has arrived at Addis Ababa airport this morning,\u201d Lam Paul Gabriel said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Machar had been held under house arrest in South Africa since late 2016 after fleeing South Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>An Ethiopian government official also confirmed Machar\u2019s arrival and said he would meet Ethiopia\u2019s prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, before his talks with Kiir.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRiek Machar has arrived,\u201d Meles Alem, foreign ministry spokesman, told Reuters news agency.<\/p>\n<p>Kiir and Machar are due to meet later on Wednesday.
