Men continue to suffer silently from effects of gender-based violence (GBV), a development Mulanje Police Station Victim Support Unit Coordinator Agnes Muyakha has attributed to a culture of silence.<\/p>\n
Muyakha was speaking at a day-long meeting that organised by Mulanje District Office of the National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Public Trust for Njeza Women Forum. It sought to equip women with social and leadership skills as the country prepares for next year\u2019s elections.<\/p>\n
\u201cMen that are suffering from gender based violence are failing to come out because they are shy. Traditionally, it is believed men are stronger than women and that, as such, men cannot be victims of gender-based violence,\u201d Muyakha said.<\/p>\n
Magistrate Mifa Chikudzu-Kaumphawi of Mulanje Magistrates\u2019 Court said property grabbing was another common form of violence responsible for denying women social and economic rights.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany widowed women are victims of property grabbing, which is another form of violence targeted at women. However, these women are protected by the law and perpetuators of property grabbing are prosecuted,\u201d Chikudzu- Kaumphawi said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Nic e District Civic Education Officer for Mulanje, Twambilire Mwabungulu, has advised women to participate in the May 21 2019 Tripartite Elections in order to advance the agenda of women empowerment.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf more women are elected into decision-making positions, they would be able to reverse the problem of gender-based violence in the country through the advancement of laws that protect women from abuse,\u201d Mwabungulu said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
