Inspired by Italian poet Dante Alighieri\u2019s words that \u201chuman society is a totality in relation to its parts\u201d, Malawi Writers Union (Mawu) Northern Region Chapter has vowed to woo women, who it feels \u201chave been marginalised for a long time\u201d, into writing.<\/p>\n
Mawu Northern Region Chapter General Secretary, Mashallo Samilo, said Tuesday that, after honouring secondary school girls who did well in the body\u2019s writing competition in January this year, the union was ready to unearth more talent.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have observed that, for a long time Malawian women have not played their rightful role in society, which is dangerous because, as Alighieri says, human society is a totality in relation to its parts. What this means is that we cannot talk of development in the arts if it is only men who are making inroads and women are being marginalised.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have to do our best to woo women. And, for this to happen, we have to start working with secondary school students, who are still sharp and can grasp the basics. To this end, we will continue with the short story writing competition so that girls, and subsequently women, can begin to play their rightful role in society,\u201d Samilo said.<\/p>\n
During the region\u2019s short story writing competition this year, Twambilire N\u2019gambi, a Form Three student of Kaseye Girls Secondary School in Chitipa District, emerged winner. She went away with K40,000.<\/p>\n
The second prize, of K20,000, went to Chisomo Matchere, a Form Three student at Mzuzu Government Secondary School while the third prize of K15,000 went to Tamika Chavinda, a year-nine student at Mzuzu Academy.<\/p>\n
This means the top three positions went to girls.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is always an honour to organise the writing competition successfully. We have received entries from all the districts in the Northern Region. We are promoting the culture of reading,\u201d Samilo said.<\/p>\n
