{"id":67077,"date":"2018-06-18T08:43:49","date_gmt":"2018-06-18T06:43:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=67077"},"modified":"2018-06-18T08:43:49","modified_gmt":"2018-06-18T06:43:49","slug":"peter-mutharika-yet-to-fulfill-promise-to-albinos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/06\/18\/peter-mutharika-yet-to-fulfill-promise-to-albinos\/","title":{"rendered":"Peter Mutharika yet to fulfill promise to albinos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is one year and three months since President Peter Mutharika directed the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development to construct a safe house for brothers Alfred and Yohane Misoya, after they encountered a brutal ritual attack.<\/p>\n<p>Association of People with Albinism (Apam) has since said it is disappointed that the government is yet to fulfill its promise.<\/p>\n<p>On the dawn of March 3 2017, Alfred and Yohane, people with albinism, escaped the death trap of uman hunters who broke into their hut with the intention to murder.<\/p>\n<p>The two brothers come from Katchewere Village, Traditional Authority (T\/A) Masache, in Chikwawa District.<\/p>\n<p>Alfred has since said they are still sleeping in an unsafe house with a grass-thatched door cover.<\/p>\n<p>He lost one hand in the attack which, he says, has hampered his ability to do routine productive work to earn a living.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn terms of our project, which the government had promised, [it] has not yet been completed. If possible, it is our appeal that the project should be finished because our lives are in danger and, in my current situation, it is hard for me to indulge in other businesses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Apam President, Overstone Kondowe, has said the association is saddened by the development.<\/p>\n<p>He said, as this is not enough, the suspects are out on bail and Yohane has been forced to drop out of school as he feels unsafe.<\/p>\n<p>Presidential spokesperson, Mgeme Kalirani, referred The Daily Times to National Task force against Attacks on People with Albinism Chairperson Hetherwick Ntaba, who is alleged to have made the commitment on behalf of Mutharika.<\/p>\n<p>But Ntaba said he was not aware that the project is at a standstill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I am aware that government indeed made a commitment to build those two victims a house because they were living in an insecure structure. I am not aware where things have stopped at. I am surprised to hear that things are at a standstill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can suspect that it must be some budgetary constraint but now that we have just gone through the budget process, where various budgets have been allocated for [activities], I am sure this must be one of the items that will be taken care of,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Police reports indicate that the country has registered 148 cases of killings and abductions of people with albinism and security agencies are still investigating 67 cases.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is one year and three months since President Peter Mutharika directed the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development to construct a safe house for brothers Alfred and Yohane Misoya, after they encountered a brutal ritual attack.
