Mzuzu University, Fred Msiska has described the failure to enrol more students at public universities in the country as a crisis which has to be addressed as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
According to Msiska, in the just ended public university selection, only 4,772 students were selected to be enrolled in public universities out of over 15,000 applicants.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the 19th Graduation Ceremony of Mzuzu University in Lilongwe on Friday, Msiska said this means at least 9,000 students that have been left out have nowhere to go.<\/p>\n
We have a crisis and there is need to deal with the crisis,” he said.<\/p>\n
Msiska further said in this regard there is need for universities to utilise and enhance Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and e-learning.<\/p>\n
According to the Deputy Vice Chancellor, the argument that ODL is undesirable is not reasonable considering the circumstances.<\/p>\n
\u201cCondemning ODL delivery mode is not an option. The technological advances surrounding us today are the assurance that we can perfect this delivery mode to the point of being at power with face to face delivery.”<\/p>\n
“If we fear problems we might be squandering opportunities therein hidden. We must face present challenges and transform them into future opportunities,” he said.<\/p>\n
President Peter Mutharika who presided over the ceremony, urged the graduates to utilise well the skills gained at the university.<\/p>\n
He said his government will establish new public universities to increase access to education.<\/p>\n
According to Mutharika, his government intends to construct Mombera University in Mzimba district.<\/p>\n
During this year’s congregation 1,185 students have graduated with certificates, diplomas and degrees.<\/p>\n
Mutharika who is also Chancellor of the University gave those that graduated with first class certificates an ward of K100,000 each.<\/p>\n
