Deutsche Welle Director- General, Peter Limbourg, has called on media practitioners meeting in Bonn for the Global Media Forum to do their best to end social and political inequalities facing the world today.<\/p>\n
He was speaking during the opening of the conference, which is taking place in Bonn, Germany. It has attracted over 2,000 media practitioners.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are inequalities everywhere -some highly visible, others obscure and insidious. From institutionalised racism to income inequality, the digital divide and power imbalances-inequalities are deeply rooted and complex,\u201d Limbourg said.<\/p>\n
He urged media practitioners to remain vigilant, even in the face of persecution.<\/p>\n
He said media practitioners face several challenges, including from people and institutions that should, otherwise, be supporting them.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe road to fighting inequalities will not be easy but it is our duty, as the media, to make sure that we make the world a better place for anyone, not just the connected few,\u201d Limbourg said.<\/p>\n
Ghanaian journalist Marriam Muhammed, who is attending the conference for the first time, said she is happy with the tone the conference has adopted.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have seen a lot of inequalities in Africa. This conference should also pay attention to those of us who are from Africa because we may have solutions to some of the challenges highlighted,\u201d Muhammed said.<\/p>\n
The Global Media Forum brings together decision-makers and influencers from the worlds of journalism, digital media, politics, business, civil society and academics. This is the eleventh edition.<\/p>\n
The opening ceremony was attended by several high ranking officials, among them former president of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai and Mariya Gabriel, a Bulgarian politician from the ruling conservative GERB-party and European Union Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society.<\/p>\n
