{"id":66619,"date":"2018-06-11T07:41:59","date_gmt":"2018-06-11T05:41:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=66619"},"modified":"2018-06-11T07:42:00","modified_gmt":"2018-06-11T05:42:00","slug":"cisanet-wants-more-action-on-climate-smart-agriculture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/06\/11\/cisanet-wants-more-action-on-climate-smart-agriculture\/","title":{"rendered":"Cisanet wants more action on Climate Smart Agriculture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Non-state actors in the agriculture sector have asked the government to increase funding towards implementation of Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) projects if the country is to become food secure and win the battle against land degradation.<\/p>\n<p>The call was made during a national policy dialogue on CSA held recently in Lilongwe where various stakeholders \u2014 including farmers, civil society organisations, government and international agriculture organisations\u2014discussed implementation of the initiative.<\/p>\n<p>CSA is an approach that helps to guide actions needed to transform and reorient agricultural systems to effectively support development and ensure food security in a changing climate.<\/p>\n<p>During the meeting, it transpired that farmers are quickly embracing the initiative in districts where it has been introduced; hence, the need to raise awareness.<\/p>\n<p>Civil Society Agriculture Network (Cisanet) National Director, Pamela Kuwali, said there is need for Malawi to be serious in implementing policies that would improve agriculture productivity in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe farmers have responded really well in that they are able to employ some of the technologies of climate smart agriculture. However, a lot needs to be done because not every farmer understands what this is because if that was the case we wouldn\u2019t be talking about low production when the rains are bad as was the experience this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to strengthen our policies and put in place a mechanism where the policies should translate into action. We must ensure that the people that are affected by the policies most understand what climate smart agriculture is about and do what the policies say,\u201d Kuwali said.<\/p>\n<p>Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Chief Director, Yanira Ntupanyama, admitted that there was slow uptake of CSA among farmers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the farmers have not adopted this on a national scale, not because of their fault, but it\u2019s our fault and that is why we are looking for basic principles that would assist us to roll out all the CSA systems or technologies that are in place,\u201d Ntupanyama said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Non-state actors in the agriculture sector have asked the government to increase funding towards implementation of Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) projects if the country is to become food secure and win the battle against land degradation.
