Hip hop artist Penjani Kalua, commonly known as Fredokiss, has pledged to pay tuition fees for 15 students at St Monica Girls and Mpondas Anglican Secondary schools for at least one academic year as one way of promoting girl\u2019s education.<\/p>\n
Fredokiss, who is Unicef\u2019s champion for children, said the support has been made courtesy of Ghetto Shoulder Initiative under Fredokiss Scholarships.<\/p>\n
The award-winning musician said his support would start in the next academic year (September- July) when he visited some of the projects Unicef is undertaking in Mangochi.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have been moved by stories from most of these students. To find school fees looks like it is a very big hustle; they go through a lot. But, as a citizen, I cannot sit back and watch our girls fail to pay, say K18, 500 a year,\u201d Fredokiss said.<\/p>\n
He added that he grew up in a community which gave him a hand when he stumbled.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery day people help me. I am only emulating that and I will pass it on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He, however, cautioned authorities who will shortlist beneficiaries to be fair and list down only the needy.<\/p>\n
Head teacher for St Monica Girls Secondary School, John Ghocho, said the country needs people of good will such as Fredokiss as the government alone cannot manage to reach out to all.<\/p>\n
Fredokiss was appointed Unicef\u2019s champion for children on February 12 this year.<\/p>\n
The musician has released songs such as \u2018Dear Jah Jah\u2019, \u2018Achina Fredo\u2019, \u2018Nambewe\u2019 and \u2018Upeze Njira\u2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
