The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development has said it is only competent and well-trained personnel that can help farmers improve productivity through the use of good agriculture practices.<\/p>\n
Speaking during the graduation of 112 students in agriculture programme at Kasungu-based Mwimba College of Agriculture (Mwica), Agriculture Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha said, for the country to meet its food production targets, competent frontline workers are needed.<\/p>\n
\u201cHaving well-trained frontline staff providing essential and training services to our farmers in modern technology is not an option; it is a necessity which is the only sure way we can develop the agriculture sector,\u201d Mwanamvekha said.<\/p>\n
He advised the 112 students to also think about establishing their own farms to help the country produce more for consumption and the market.<\/p>\n
Agricultural Research and Extension Trust (Aret) Chief Executive Officer, Andy Khumbanyiwa, said the college is aimed at providing practical agriculture skills to the students.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe believe the graduating students have acquired adequate knowledge, skills, discipline , resilience and versatility to enable them to excel in the real world,\u201d Khumbanyiwa said.<\/p>\n
Mwica, which is under Aret management, started operating in 2001 with a focus on tobacco production but now focuses on general areas in agriculture.<\/p>\n
The college offers skills and knowledge in tobacco production, agribusiness, irrigation, water resource management and livestock management among others.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
