Malawi Stock Exchange (MSE)- listed hospitality chain, Sunbird Tourism PLC, has said its new100-bedroom three-star hotel to be constructed in Salima District will cost K3.5 billion.<\/p>\n
Sunbird Tourism PLC Chief Executive Officer, Yusuf Olela said in an interview that the project is expected to commence in August 2018.<\/p>\n
The development will bring the number of Sunbird hotels in the district to two, after Sunbird Livingstonia.<\/p>\n
Olela said there has been growing demand for quality hotel facilities in the lakeshore district, hence the decision to construct the new facility.<\/p>\n
He said demand is mainly driven by both leisure and business segments and this emanates from the source market of Lilongwe as well as the Southern Region.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis has actually been necessitated by lack of capacity within the properties along the lake. So, beginning August this year, we are going to commence construction of a new foster property just next to the existing Sunbird Livingstonia and the project will take two years,\u201d Olela said.<\/p>\n
Currently, the company is renovating and expanding capacity at Livingstonia Hotel to increase number of rooms from 35 to 44.<\/p>\n
Olela further disclosed that the hotel chain has pumped over K1 billion in the rehabilitation project, which is expected to be completed by November this year.<\/p>\n
