Paul -and- Mike national chess defending champion, Petros \u201cRazorblade\u201d Mfune, has taken an early lead in his quest for the title-defence.<\/p>\n
Mfune is now leading 2.5-1.5 after overcoming former champion Chiletso Chipanga at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe over the weekend.<\/p>\n
The two chess gurus will play in a 12-duel as they wrestle for the title, which is sponsored to the tune of K600, 000.<\/p>\n
According to Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) officials, Mfune took too many risks to be the first to score on Saturday.<\/p>\n
In game two, Chipanga quickly retaliated to level at 1-1, and in the process disturbing Mfune and his home fans.<\/p>\n
When the games resumed on Sunday, Mfune made sure he scored first again to put it at 2-1. But in the second game, Chipanga\u2019s overwhelming attack failed to crack through Mfune\u2019s solid defence to only achieve a vital away draw, putting the score at 2.5 to 1.5.<\/p>\n
Mfune said he was convinced his opponent was there to frustrate his plans.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will step up my preparations, my opponent is determined to overthrow me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
