{"id":65806,"date":"2018-05-25T11:05:37","date_gmt":"2018-05-25T09:05:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=65806"},"modified":"2018-05-25T11:05:38","modified_gmt":"2018-05-25T09:05:38","slug":"sewer-pipe-poses-health-risk-in-blantyre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2018\/05\/25\/sewer-pipe-poses-health-risk-in-blantyre\/","title":{"rendered":"Sewer pipe poses health risk in Blantyre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A broken sewer pipe in Makata Industrial Area, Blantyre, has become a health hazard to people in the area as deadly gases are potentially being released into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>The sewer pipe, which has been broken for three months, has been spilling sewage waste and polluted the air with a foul smell.<\/p>\n<p>According to environmentalists, broken sewer pipes release gases, such as methane, into the atmosphere and high concentrations can lead to gas poisoning and cause asphyxiation, sore throats and respiratory problems<\/p>\n<p>Henry Sakasa, who works close to the broken pipe, expressed concern that the pipe broke three months ago, yet nothing is being done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is too much. The smell is just too much. It\u2019s over three months since the pipe broke down but the [Blantyre] City Council is doing nothing. Some city officials came here last week, saying they were inspecting sanitation in the area. I asked them what hygiene they were talking about when a broken pipe is not being attended to?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>BCC spokesperson, Anthony Kasunda, said the council was not aware of the broken pipe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not aware of that pipe but we will rectify it as soon as possible. Council officials are too few to inspect the whole city regularly.
