Catholic bishops have pledged spiritual and moral support to the Association of People with Albinism in Malawi (Apam).<\/p>\n
Follows last month\u2019s arrest of a Catholic priest implicated in the murder a person living with albinism in Machinga District.<\/p>\n
Under the banner of Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM), the bishops said they found allegations against their priest Thomas Muhosha serious and disturbing because they involve the killing of a human being<\/p>\n
\u201cThe church loves you and will always stand by people living with albinism and defend them. It is for this reason that the bishops wanted to meet the Executive Committee of Apam to express our solidarity with you,\u201d Archbishop Tarsizio Ziyaye said during the meeting.<\/p>\n
ECM representatives\u2014including Ziyaye, Bishop George Tambala and ECM Secretary General Father Henry Saindi \u2014 met the leadership of Apam to discuss the matter.<\/p>\n
According to minutes that The Daily Times <\/em>has seen, the bishops reaffirmed ECM\u2019s position on the sanctity of life, including that of persons with albinism.<\/p>\n Tambala, who happens to be the local ordinary of Zomba Diocese where Fr Muhosha comes from, said the diocese received the news with devastation.<\/p>\n Apam National Coordinator, Boniface Massah, commended ECM for their support.<\/p>\n He challenged ECM\u2014 through its justice arm, Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) \u2014 to take necessary steps in making sure that the issue is handled with the seriousness it deserves.<\/p>\n \u201cCCJP could consider coming up with an independent team of co-investigators and co-prosecutors to support the police and the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions,\u201d Massah said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Catholic bishops have pledged spiritual and moral support to the Association of People with Albinism in Malawi (Apam).
